Salary:

 Compensation varies based on qualifications in accordance with department and college policy.

A furnished faculty apartment, transportation to and from Curitiba, and a daily meal allowance will also be provided.

Basic Function:

The College of Arts and Sciences, in coordination with the Office of Global Education, is seeking to build a pool of high-quality faculty for teaching introductory undergraduate coursework in the sciences at KSU’s American Academy at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná - Curitiba, Brazil.

 

The responsibility of the adjunct faculty is to teach the course with a cohort of students during an intensive, condensed module, with classes offered mornings and afternoons each weekday of the course period. The instruction, course material, and assignments are conducted in English. The course must be taught in keeping with the academic expectations of the department concerning learning outcomes, quality of course materials studied, as well as the number, type, and quality of student work assignments required in the determination of the course grade.

 

There is a particular need for Fall 2024 but applicants may be considered for teaching in future terms.

 

This posting seeks to establish a pool of instructors for introductory undergraduate coursework in the following areas:

 

Biological Anthropology

Biology

Chemistry

Environmental Sciences

Geology/Earth Sciences

Geography

Physics

 

This is a special assignment in an exceptional program. Kent State students in the American Academy take their first two years of college coursework in Curitiba, Brazil. Upon completing the program, students may matriculate to the Kent campus and continue their bachelor’s degree program. Engaging students in interactive learning activities to meet course objectives. The curriculum follows the Kent State catalog description (see catalog.kent.edu) and is delivered in accordance with defined course standards and outcomes.

Adjunct faculty are expected to:
• Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts in accordance with departmental requirements.
• Prepare and deliver learning activities to achieve course outcomes.
• Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, papers, and examinations.
• Maintain and submit student grades and other required documentation by specified deadlines.
• Perform student learning outcome assessment for accreditation purposes.
• Be available to students for office hours and out of classroom academic support.
• Be sensitive to the needs of a diverse population.
• Attend periodic meetings relative to teaching duties and training and development.

Instructors for sections at the American Academy must be willing to travel to Brazil; a valid passport is required. The Office of Global Education will make all flight and housing arrangements. Sections at the American Academy are typically held in intensive, 3-week modules.

Minimum Qualifications:

Successful candidates should have a master’s degree in a relevant area; a doctoral degree is preferred.

They should also have strong communication skills with the ability to relate to international undergraduate students.

Once applicants are qualified, they will be added to the pool of instructors available to teach for the American Academy. Staffing will be filled for each class on an as-needed basis.
