Job Title:

Assistant Director, Safety and Community Care, University Housing

Physical Location:

 Kent Campus, Kent, OH

Salary:

 $51,460

Basic Function:

Provide leadership for residential safety and security, residence hall conduct, student behavior, and conflict resolution; work one-on-one with students for support and resources during crisis, and assist with coordination of crisis response department wide.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Assist with University Housing’s case management processes, including assistance with cases related to conduct and CARE concerns, as well as referrals to the hall staff, the Office of Student Conduct, and KSUPD.

Interact with and coordinate support for students in crisis. Utilize on-campus resources to make appropriate referrals to students who need assistance.

Represent University Housing at hearing panels with the Office of Student Conduct.

Meet with students to develop behavioral expectations.

Train staff on student conduct, restorative justice, and mental health and well-being topics.

Supervise full-time classified, unclassified, and student staff.

Manage day-to-day operations for the Safety Assistant program, including onboarding, scheduling, and evaluating student employees.

Develop, support, and implement programs to support educational mission (e.g., safety awareness and crime prevention programs).

Support, implement, enforce, and interpret Federal, State, and University policy and procedures.

Coordinate partnership with Office of Fire Prevention, including oversight of fire safety room inspections, fire drills, and fire safety-related programs.

Provide guidance to staff in enforcement of policy.

Assist in coordination of criminal background check process, behavior conduct review, and driver’s license checks for student employees.

Serve in second level on-call duty rotation, providing crisis intervention guidance, as situations arise.

Serve on related department, division, university committees, and task forces.

Assist in evaluation of all related processes, programs, and initiatives.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in higher education, counseling, social work or related human services field. Three years student services experience (advising, residence life, campus safety, conflict resolution/mediation, and/or student conduct) to include supervision experience. Must also be able to work non-traditional hours

License/Certification:

 

Knowledge Of:

Student Development Theory

Restorative justice practices or conflict resolution*

Safety practices and concerns in higher education setting*

Legal issues in higher education; i.e. Title IX and Clery Act

Skill In:

Written communication and interpersonal skills

Conflict resolution and/or mediation*

Time management, organizational, and problem solving skills

Supervision of others

Report writing and documentation

Development and facilitation of training programs *

Utilization of applicable software *

Ability To:

Respond calmly and quickly to challenging situations

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Experience in university student housing and/or student conduct

Previous experience working with individuals with mental health issues in a fast-paced setting

Experience responding to crises; crisis intervention training or exposure

Conflict resolution or mediation training

Assessments:

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
