Forty (40) hours per week; however, work hours will vary to meet university needs.

Basic Function

Install, maintain, and repair tools and equipment in a laboratory or studio. Build or rebuild equipment and assist faculty, students and university maintenance personnel in establishing and observing basic health and safety practices.

Additional Basic Functions - if applicable

Operates the academic learning commons makerspace, maintains and repairs equipment, schedules student workers, and orders supplies. Assists faculty and students one on one and through group training. Performs basic library functions as needed.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Schedule and prepare laboratory activities to meet the needs of faculty, continuing education and other programs.

Conduct training programs including presentation of materials; select training aids and appropriate laboratory equipment and tooling; demonstrate proper use of equipment and tooling; observe and assist students participating in laboratory or studio exercises; develop new labs for academic classes as needed; assist students having trouble with lab equipment and assist with graduate research as needed.

Implement safety programs and procedures and maintain and enforce appropriate safety procedures in laboratory.

Install laboratory equipment including equipment, computers and controllers, test and inspect equipment, and software. Assist with the installation and setup of software.

Maintain, troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment; maintain laboratory facilities.

Design and fabricate tooling for equipment; may program and operate machine tools.
Supervise, train and direct student employees.

Assist in research programs.

Document and maintain records of laboratory activities.

Contact vendors regarding the purchase of supplies and forward information to business office.

Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate Degree in mechanical or industrial engineering technology or related field (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills and abilities).

Three years experience maintaining and repairing a variety of equipment.

Must have a valid Ohio Drivers License.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of and ability to repair mechanical systems (plumbing, electrical and combustion).
2. Knowledge and skill in wood working, metalworking and fabricating.
3. Knowledge of and ability to repair and use equipment such as, lathes, milling machines, kilns, furnaces, torches, sanders, saws, sandblasters, drills and drill presses, welders, routers, jigsaws.
4. Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability to diagnose and repair equipment.
5. Knowledge of and ability to communicate good safety practices to safely operate equipment.
6. Ability to communicate and work effectively with students, staff and faculty.
7. Ability to manage multiple projects.
8. Skill in interpersonal communications to effectively interact with University personnel and the public to provide training information to students and staff.
9. Skill in written communication to compose memos, reports, etc.
10. Ability to develop and conduct presentations.
11. Knowledge of computer hardware and software.
12. Ability to gather and analyze test data and other information and draw valid conclusions.
13. Ability to maintain accurate records.
14. Ability to work extended hours and flexible schedules.

Additional Minimum Qualifications - if applicable

Experience in routine library duties, circulation of materials through KentLink and OhioLink, and Makerspace equipment and operation and repair preferred.

Physical Requirements

Laboratory environment; exposed to electrical, chemical, dirt, grease, etc., may be exposed to heights and various types of equipment; requires moderate physical effort including standing for extended periods of time , bending, stooping and standing and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Work hours may vary to include occasional evenings, weekends and holidays; may require on- and off-campus travel.
