Basic Function

To provide management of chemicals and chemical safety with the Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI). Perform organic synthesis. Reports to Senior Research Fellow.

Additional Basic Functions - if applicable

Responsible for daily operations of the organic synthesis facility, perform organic synthesis, manage chemical inventory for the institute.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a member of Organic Synthesis Facility.

Responsible for the daily operations of the Organic Synthesis Facility.

Perform organic synthesis.

Serve as the Chemical Safety Officer of the LCI, overseeing the lab safety in cooperation with the university Manager, Research Safety and Compliance.

Offer regular and ad-hoc chemical safety training to the members of the LCI research community.

Manage the chemical inventory for existing and in-coming chemicals.

Maintain the supply of chemicals for the LCI Research Facilities.

Provide functional guidance of administrative/professional employees and/or direct supervision of support staff on an ongoing basis.

May provide ongoing facilitation of consecutive projects.

Preform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Chemistry. Four to five years experience performing organic synthesis.

License/Certification: Not applicable.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience performing liquid crystal synthesis. Experience managing and operating a laboratory.

Physical Requirements

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
