Access Control Technician

Salary:

 $24.07 per hour

Basic Function:

To oversee, troubleshoot, and perform preventative maintenance on the access control system to include software, hardware, and mechanical locks and keys.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Oversees Lock Shop operations to include supervising classified, temporary, or student employees assigned to assist with duties:

- Train and instruct employees on procedures and policies.

- Assign and monitor work activities.

- Coordinate work flow and schedule to ensure deadlines are met, priorities are recognized, and policies/procedures are followed.

- May participate in the interviewing and selection of job applicants and the performance evaluation of assigned employees; may recommend personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline, etc.).

Provides repair service and troubleshooting for electronic access control system (e.g., readers, electric strikes, wiring, control boards/panels, etc.).

Performs troubleshooting and preventative maintenance of door contacts, request for exit sensors and other programmable door handle/software.

Configures all access control panels, boards, ports and output linkages for software/hardware integration (e.g., programmed time zones and electric strikes.). Proposes changes to access panel standards and outlined procedure libraries as necessary. Implements access control changes in accordance with developed protocols.

Installs, adjusts, and maintains door closures, ADA-auto operators, locks sets, panic devices, door hinges, electronic strikes, thresholds and door frames.

Rebuilds electronic locksets.

Updates wiring diagrams.

Installs new and replacement electronic components of the access control system.

Provides mechanical keys to key staff members.

Maintains database of keys.

Runs cabling and infrastructure for new access control systems.

Installs mechanical and electronic keys for emergency key keeps.

May provide repair for personal digital assistants and cables that are used by student staff for the use of programming electronic look sets.

Monitors and maintains inventory levels of electronic components.

Serves as subject matter expert, primary liaison to and acts on behalf of supervisor; in regular consultation with designated departments such as Office of University Architect and vendors/contractors. Serves on appropriate committees to ensure adherence to standards, as well as coordination of resources.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

An Associate degree in Information Sciences/Computer Sciences or closely related field. A total of three years experience which has included a minimum of two years experience in the installation and programming of electronic access control systems and one year of locksmith experience. Or a combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to five years experience which has included a minimum of three years experience in the installation and programming of electronic access control systems and two years of locksmith experience.

License/Certification:

Locksmith certification. Valid Ohio driver's license.

Knowledge Of:

Access control system, end-user device platforms, application software, and desktop office computing *
Problem diagnosis procedures and problem request reporting and monitoring tools
Safety practices
Inventory control

Skill In:

Utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and other applicable software *
Operation of a variety of tools (e.g., soldering equipment, drills, etc.)
Managing time and resources and effectively balance multiple priorities

Ability To:

Provide timely service in the effective implementation and execution of access processes and procedures
Attend and complete additional training classes specific to electronic access control systems
Wire and troubleshoot electronic access control systems, including programming deficiencies
Research and document new issues *
Work varied hours and shifts to include evenings, weekends and holidays
Communicate effectively orally and in writing with technical and non-technical users to elicit information necessary to resolve problems
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues, technical staff and end users
Effectively assess feasibility of solutions in terms of university needs and available resources
Lift up to 50 pounds.
Supervise people and projects
Learn new skills in the application and installation of new access controls materials and products
Provide positive customer service
Work independently and with a team

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Knowledge and experience with access control systems that support locks such as Stanley, Best, Onity and Assa-Abloy.

Working Schedule:

 Monday - Friday 8 AM - 5 PM, unless otherwise discussed with you supervisor
