Job Title:

Pipefitter

Physical Location:

 Kent Campus - Kent, OH

Salary:

 $23.26 - $24.31 (6 month rate)

Bonus:  Effective with the pay period which contains October 1, 2024 each employee on the active payroll shall receive a one-time lump sum payment in the amount of one thousand dollars ($1,000).

Basic Function:

Fabricates, assembles, installs, inspects, maintains and repairs heating/cooling systems, piping, fixtures and related equipment used in the control, distribution, utilization and draining of water(hot/cold/process/utility), water carried waste, air, gas, high and low pressure steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, and ventilation. Reports to Pipefitter Supervisor or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Fabricates, installs, replaces and repairs high and low pressure steam, water (hot/cold/process/utility), air, gas, and heating/cooling lines, expansion joints, traps, regulators, bearings, valves, pumps, heaters, heat exchangers, coils, and other parts; fuses different alloy metals through precise cutting, threading, grooving, bending and welding; repairs and installs environmental laboratory, kitchen and laundry equipment; inspects and maintains building facilities and equipment; performs preventive maintenance; maintains log of repairs; digs ditches for pipe installation and repair.

Keeps material bins in order and keeps a clean work area; fills out material and work forms for records and supplies.

Repairs and installs insulation, chemicals, or protective coatings to piping systems and related equipment.

May drive vehicle to pick up and deliver personnel and materials.

Orders parts and materials, reports low supply levels to supervisor.

Uses computerized work order system to track work progress and fill out daily timecards.

May train and direct student employees or employees in a lower pay grade in proper pipefitting procedures; may participate in training new employees.

May assist other trades as necessary.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

A minimum of three years experience in pipefitting, steam fitting, welding, plumbing, and HVAC (or an equivalent combination of education or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities).

License/Certification:

Valid Ohio driver's license with safe driving record. Must be eligible to be certified by the State of Ohio to weld high pressure steel piping with a diameter of 2 7/8" or greater (6" pipe test) and schedule 40 and 80 thickness. Employment in this classification is contingent upon a valid State certification prior to completion of probationary period or, when a probationary period is not involved, prior to assignment to classification. Must have ability to maintain certification.

Knowledge Of:

Pipefitting theory, procedures, and equipment
Welding theory, procedures, and equipment
Fluid mechanics and transfer process
Heat transfer theory
Appropriate safety practices
Local, state, and federal regulations related to pipefitting, welding and plumbing codes and OSHA standards

Skill In:

Assembly, installation, fabrication, and maintenance of heating/cooling systems, piping, fixtures, and related equipment used in the control, distribution, utilization, and draining of water(hot/cold/process/utility), water carried waste, steam, air, and gas
Installation, maintenance and repair of high and low pressure steam distribution systems and equipment
Use of pipefitting tools and equipment (e.g., manual and power pipe cutting equipment, threading machine, etc.)
Welding and soldering

Ability To:

Diagnose problems and take appropriate action
Interpret and apply blueprints and schematic diagrams
Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds
Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages)
Read (e.g., technical information), write (e.g., material requisitions), and accurately follow oral, written, and graphic instructions
Work in high places and tunnels

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Exposed to dirt, fumes, odors, grease, heights, extreme temperatures, humidity, and variable weather conditions; requires considerable physical exertion to include frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds (e.g., pipes), occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g., steam regulators, traps), working in cramped quarters and assuming awkward positions; may be required to work varied hours and shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays; may be called to work in emergency situations; requires on- and off-campus travel.

Working Schedule:

 Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
