Job Title:

Plumber

Physical Location:

 Kent Campus - Kent, OH 

Salary:

 $23.96 - $25.04 (6 month rate)

Basic Function:

Assembles, installs, inspects, maintains and repairs heating systems, piping, fixtures and equipment used in the control, distribution, utilization and draining of water and water carried waste, air, and gas. Reports to Electrical and Plumbing Supervisor or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Performs plumbing repairs and installations; cuts, threads, solders pipe; rebuilds traps and valves; operates cutting, threading and bending machines (manual and powered); repairs and installs environmental laboratory, laundry, and kitchen equipment; unclogs commodes, sinks and sewage lines; installs water, steam and gas lines; replaces valves, traps and thermostats, etc.

Inspects and maintains building facilities and equipment (checks pipes for leaks, lubricates pumps and valves, changes filters, etc.); digs ditches for pipe installation, drains manholes.

Keeps material bins in order and keeps a clean work area; fills out material and work forms for records and supplies.

Operates both manual and powered pipe cutting and threading machines, operates welding equipment; maintains generators, sewer machines, etc.; operates and repairs heating coils, pumps, valves, regulators, temperature and pressure regulation devices, flow devices and meters, and any other device needed to control, supply or utilize water.

Repairs and installs insulation, chemicals, paint or protective coatings to plumbing systems.

May drive vehicle to pick up and deliver personnel and materials.

May train and direct student employees or employees in a lower pay grade in proper plumbing procedures; may participate in training new employees; may assist other trades workers.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of plumbing apprenticeship training program, joint vocational school plumbing training, or a minimum of three years skilled plumbing experience (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities).

License/Certification:

Valid Ohio driver's license with safe driving record.

Knowledge Of:

Plumbing theory and procedures
Ohio plumbing code
Plumbing equipment, tools, and materials
Appropriate safety practices

Skill In:

Plumbing to include assembly, installation, and maintenance of heating systems, piping, fixtures, and equipment used in the control, distribution, utilization, and draining of water and water carried waste, air, and gas
Use of plumbing tools and equipment (e.g., manual and power pipe cutting equipment, threading machine, etc.)
Welding and soldering

Ability To:

Diagnose problems and take appropriate action
Interpret and apply blueprints
Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds
Perform mathematics associated with plumbing trade applications
Read (e.g., technical information/manuals), write (e.g., work logs), and accurately follow oral, written, and graphic instructions
Maintain accurate records
Work in high places and tunnels

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Exposed to dust, dirt, variable temperatures and weather conditions, fumes, chemicals, odors, loud equipment noise, damp and/or cramped conditions, heights, and potentially dangerous equipment (e.g., torches); requires considerable physical exertion to include frequent lifting of up to 75 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g., pipes, plumbing fixtures), and extended periods of stooping and kneeling; may work varied hours and shifts to include occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays; may be called to work in emergency situations; requires on-campus travel.

Working Schedule:

 Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
