Job Title:

Painter

Physical Location:

 Kent Campus - Kent, OH 

Salary:

 $21.46 - $22.41 (6 month rate)

Basic Function:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled work in the preparation and painting of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, structures, fixtures, signs, furniture, and equipment. Reports to Paint Shop Crewleader, Paint Shop Supervisor, Structures Superintendent, or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Uses roller, brush, and spraying equipment to apply paint, stain, and varnish to ceilings, equipment, furniture, exterior surfaces, signs, etc.; mixes and matches paints, and applies wall coverings to walls.

Prepares working surfaces and areas; removes and scrapes paint; operates sandblasting or power washing equipment; plasters; fills cracks, holes and joints with putty, plaster, compound, or other filler; masks or moves furniture and equipment; places drop cloths on working area floor; rigs scaffolding; caulks and tools tubs, showers, windows and other interior or exterior surfaces; troubleshoots problems with existing finished surfaces and takes appropriate action.

Estimates and gathers necessary materials, tools, and equipment required to complete a job; monitors inventory levels and reports supply needs to supervisor.

Cleans and maintains equipment and work area; makes minor repairs to equipment.

Performs miscellaneous paint shop duties (e.g., stencils letters).

Drives vehicle to pick up and deliver personnel and materials.

May train and direct student employees or employees in a lower pay grade in proper procedures; may participate in training new employees.

Assists other non-skilled or skilled tradespersons as required.

Performs all other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

A minimum of three years skilled painting experience (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities). Completion of vocational education program in painting or apprenticeship may be substituted for one year of experience.

License/Certification:

 

Knowledge Of:

Painting and preparation procedures; industry best practices *
Plaster, wallpaper, and drywall finishing procedures *
Painting equipment and tools including aerial lifts, ladders, scaffolding*
Appropriate safety practices *

Skill In:

Prepping and painting *
Use of painting tools and equipment (roller, brush, spraying equipment, etc.) *
Interpersonal and written communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone *

Ability To:

Identify problems and determine appropriate action *
Lift 100 pounds *
Perform mathematics associated with trade applications (e.g., multiplication, adding fractions, using formulas, etc.) *
Read (e.g., work orders, labels), write (material requests), and accurately follow oral and written instructions *
Work in high places *
Communicate with University personnel and public (e.g., to explain procedures in work area) *
Operate computerized equipment
Work independently or with a team
Promote Customer Service*

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Exposed to dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, heights, variable temperature and weather conditions, and potentially dangerous equipment (e.g., airless sprayer, sandblaster); requires considerable physical exertion to include regular climbing of ladders and scaffolding, extended periods of standing and assuming awkward positions, frequent lifting of up to 75 pounds (e.g., scaffolding) and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g., sand bags). May work varied hours and shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. May be called to work in emergency situations. Requires on and off-campus travel.

Working Schedule:

 Monday through Friday, 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
